BREAKING NEWS : LA News Helicopter Crash

A tragic accident has shaken Los Angeles this week after a news helicopter covering breaking traffic coverage crashed and burst into flames in the Chatsworth neighborhood of the San Fernando Valley.

The helicopter, operated by Angel City Air and providing aerial coverage for NBC4 and its sister station Telemundo 52, was reporting live on a fatal collision between an SUV and a Metro bus when it went down in a parking lot near a self-storage facility on Tuesday evening. Witnesses described the aircraft erupting into a fireball on impact, with several nearby vehicles and storage containers also catching fire.

Three people lost their lives in the crash: veteran aerial photojournalist Eliana Moreno, a familiar voice to NBC4 and Telemundo viewers, and pilot George Marciniw, both aboard the helicopter. A third victim, 29-year-old Edy Gutierrez Mejia, was killed on the ground. Another person was hospitalized after suffering a panic attack.

The National Transportation Safety Board has called the video captured live from inside the helicopter during the broadcast "the most important evidence" in determining the cause of the crash. Investigators are working to obtain a pristine copy of the recording for a detailed sound spectrum analysis, noting they can already hear sounds consistent with changes in engine speed in the footage.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and California Governor Gavin Newsom both offered condolences to the victims' families and the NBC4 news team, thanking first responders for their efforts at the scene. NBC4 and Telemundo 52 said their hearts are with the families, friends, and colleagues who lost loved ones in "tonight's devastating" crashes.

The investigation into both the bus collision and the helicopter crash remains ongoing, with the local aviation community mourning the loss of two of its own.
