A historic wildfire emergency is unfolding in eastern Washington state, where three major blazes — the Old Trails, Fairview, and Autumn Lane fires — ignited over the weekend and have rapidly become one of the most destructive fire events in the region's history. More than 700 structures have been destroyed and nearly 65,000 people have been forced to evacuate, with the fires having burned over 8,000 acres combined and remaining at 0% containment. CNN

Smoke has become so dense that Spokane officials are warning residents to avoid driving unless they are evacuating, as visibility can deteriorate rapidly with shifting winds. Federal Interagency Incident Management Teams have taken command of the firefighting response, with California's Cal Fire coordinating two national crews — marking the first time a Cal Fire team has ever been activated to Washington state. Critical infrastructure has also been affected: a VA medical center and several VA clinics in the Spokane area closed due to evacuation zones, and Fairchild Air Force Base issued a limited evacuation order for personnel and families in Level 3 zones. Cooler temperatures forecast for the coming days are expected to help firefighters gain ground, but as of now, the fires remain largely uncontained, and officials continue urging residents to follow evacuation orders immediately.
